Pope
John XXIII Award
The 2003 Pope John XXIII recipient is
Reverend Canice
Connors, OFM Conv. He will be
presented with the award at the NOCERCC Convention in Houston, Texas,
February 24-27, 2003.
Father Connors, a member of
the Order of Friars Minor Conventual, was ordained to the priesthood in
May 1961. He attended The Catholic University of America where he received
a bachelor of arts degree and a master’s in philosophy. In 1971 he earned
his Ph.D. in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout his
years as a friar, Father Connors has had a distinguished record of
administrative service including: headmaster at Canevin High School in
Pittsburgh; rector of St. Anthony-on-Hudson Theologate, Rensselaer, New
York; secretary of planning and management for the Archdiocese of
Baltimore, Maryland; director of Southdown Treatment Center in Aurora,
Ontario, Canada and chief executive officer of St. Luke Institute, a
treatment center for clergy battling substance abuse, psychological and
sexual disorders, in Silver Spring, Maryland. Father Connors has had
considerable ministerial experience, including as pastor, from 1987-1992,
of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In April
1997, Father Connors was presented the prestigious President’s Award from
the National Federation of Priests’ Councils. That same year he was
elected minister provincial of the Conventual Franciscan Friars of
Immaculate Conception Province and is currently serving his second term in
that capacity. He has held the position of president of the Conference of
Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) since July 2001. Father Connors is a
consultant for numerous religious communities and a retreat director for
clergy; he has offered workshops and seminars and taught at a number of
universities throughout the United States, Canada and Australia.

Award was established in 1983. This award is ordinarily given to NOCERCC
members. It is usually presented to a director of continuing
education/ongoing formation for active involvement in advancing the
mission and goals of NOCERCC and outstanding leadership in supporting the
life and ministry of priests.

President's
Distinguished Service Award
The 2003 President's Distinguished Service
Award recipient
is Reverend J.
Cletus Kiley. The award will be
presented to him by NOCERCC President Reverend Mark R. Hession at a
special banquet during the NOCERCC Annual Convention in Houston, Texas,
February 26, 2003.
Father Kiley is a priest of
the Archdiocese of Chicago. He holds a doctorate in ministry from the
University of St. Mary of the Lake, Chicago, a master’s degree in applied
spirituality from the University of San Francisco, and a master of
divinity degree from Mundelein Seminary, Chicago. Father Kiley is
currently the executive director of the Secretariat for Priestly Life and
Ministry of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. In this
position, which he has held since 1997, Father Kiley deals with clergy
morale, priest and church personnel issues. In July 2002 Msgr. William P.
Fay, general secretary of the USCCB, named Father Kiley as deputy general
secretary for the protection of children and young people, formalizing his
role as chief staff person for the bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual
Abuse. In the past Father Kiley served as director of personnel services
for the Archdiocese of Chicago and also as acting vicar of religious. He
is an experienced retreat master for priests and parish missions and has
spoken and written widely on priest personnel issues. He has been a
consultant on personnel and organizational issues for over fifteen
different dioceses and organizations in the United States. Father Kiley is
fluent in English, Spanish and Italian.
*The NOCERCC President’s Distinguished
Service Award was established in 1994. It is ordinarily presented to a
person whose service of the gospel and the Church exemplifies NOCERCC’s
mission and goals.
