Washington Theological Union Conference Series presents:

You are invited to join Washington Theological Union on Saturday, November 12, 2011, 9:00AM-4:30PM for the first conference in the series, "atom + Eve: Using Science in Pastoral Ministry."

Designed specifically to aid those in using Science in their pastoral ministry, this free conference will bring together noted Catholic theologians and  prominent scientists to discuss how the Big Bang (and other theories) can cohere with our understanding of divine creation of the universe for an “authentic renewal” of faith within our Catholic Church communities.

Scientists will explain the scientific perspective on the origin of the universe, including the theory of multiverses. Through the lens of quantum mechanics, they will discuss claims by Stephen Hawking and others that God is no longer needed as creator of the universe.

Sessions include:
Modern Physics, the Beginning, and Creation
Dr. Stephen M. Barr, PhD, University of Delaware

Modern Cosmology, Building a Better Container for the Human Soul
Dr. Sten Odenwald, PhD, National Aeronautics & Space Administration

What the Bible Can Contribute to an Understanding of Divine Creation
Dr. Robert D. Miller, II, S.F.O., PhD, Catholic University of America

Theology and the Big Bang
Rev. Abbot James Wiseman, OSB, STD,Catholic University of America

Location: Washington Theological Union, 6896 Laurel Street, NW, Washington, DC 20012

This conference is free and open to the public, however, registration is required. Lunch will also be provided for you at no cost.

So you're getting a new parochial vicar...
For the experience to be good for everyone -- the new parochial vicar, the parish staff, the parishioners and you, the pastor -- it's important to make some plans before your new parochial vicar arrives.

Here are some ideas for welcoming your newly ordained priest.

Mini-Sabbatical for Priests

If you’re between parish assignments, this may be the perfect time to refresh your spirit and refocus your priorities. Consider taking just four weeks to relax and recharge your spiritual life.

The Stoking the Fire Sabbatical offers a quiet place and a focused program to prepare you for the next challenges of ministry. Join fellow priests in this unique sabbatical experience on the Saint Meinrad campus. You’ll find a mix of activities and recreation, paired with time for reflection and relaxation.(PDF)
